Just like an adult, a baby may have vision problems: mild strabismus, amblyopia, hyperopia, daltonism or myopia. For its comfort, it is important to carry out a rapid screening to possibly provide the necessary care and follow-up. For that, direction the orthoptist for a test "baby vision"!

What exactly is the baby vision test?

  • The test "baby vision" is an examination carried out in the office by an orthoptist. It is used to early detect possible vision disorders in toddlers from 3 months. This is not a mandatory test, but pediatricians strongly recommend it to babies who have a family history, for example, when mom and dad are nearsighted. The "baby vision" test is totally covered by Health Insurance.

Test "baby vision": how is a session held at the orthoptist?

  • The orthoptist will, at first, proceed with you to a small assessment. He will want to know, among other things, who in the family suffers from vision problems. The orthoptist will then place your baby on your lap, then install a large cardboard cover that will partially isolate you. Know that some practitioners have a totally isolated room for this purpose. The goal ? That your child's vision is not stimulated by everything around him. The orthoptist will then catch his attention with the help of various objects (soft toys, mobiles, musical books, balloons ...). Then the practitioner will suggest to your baby a series of images representing, for example, circles some of which are in relief, lines of increasingly fine or even elementary contrasting figures. The orthoptist can also show him shapes or bright spots. In any case, your baby will have to identify them and identify them with his fingers. Finally, the orthoptist will control the bottom of the eyes of your little one with a lamp.

Test "baby vision" at the orthoptist: a routine exam!

  • It is not uncommon for parents of a very young child to have a visit to the orthoptist. But this is a very common test that is absolutely not painful and has the advantage of being very fast (usually 20 minutes to have a reliable result). In addition, the orthoptist makes sure to make the exercise as fun as possible so as not to tire baby.
  • Once the "baby vision" test is done, you can be reassured about the visual acuity of your little one. If, however, the orthoptist detects a small vision disorder, he will be able to intervene without delay. He can thus prescribe a suitable correction or possibly a visual rehabilitation. The "baby vision" test is essential. Indeed, more eye disorders of toddlers are diagnosed quickly, more support and follow-up will be effective.
