Before standing on his legs, your baby will have to arch his lumbar, straighten the shoulder blades, lift his head, for a first step: sit down. On average, this occurs around 6-7 months, with each baby progressing at their own pace.

6-7 months, as he will like to sit

  • This age is an average. Some babies manage to sit before and others will do it later.
  • A baby has so much to learn that he can not lead all "battles" at the same time. If some people hold in their high chair before 6 months, others handle the objects with dexterity, still others eat the vegetables and the meat with the spoon ... each one its rhythm.
  • No need to stress and want to over-stimulate your toddler. Stimulation must be limited to simple gestures of help and encouragement. Lying on his back, he holds out his little hands towards you to straighten up? Offer him your two fingers, but let him do everything himself to straighten up.

Sit down: the big steps

  • 1. The first few weeks after birth, the baby remains in a fetal position with rounded back. His sluggish muscles can not support the weight of his head or his bust. He is not without strength and is active. He moves a lot, he tones his body, preparing him for the next step.
  • 2. During the first month, he gesticulates, makes jolts, attempts to flip ... these movements are for your baby a way to train. After a month, he is able to unfold his whole body. Installed on his stomach, he raises his head by leaning on his forearms. A pose he can only keep a few seconds, then a minute!
  • 3. Next step, he holds his head perfectly that is no longer dangling. He can also raise his bust with confidence. It only remains to coordinate its two movements to gain height. Around 3-4 months, he will have toned his back enough to get there.
  • 4. A month or so later, he stabilized the position of his bust on his outstretched arms and can turn his head to the right and to the left. This is the moment to install it on a large carpet of awakening, because it needs space to gain this autonomy. A roll on the side is always possible ... and he will have to do many contortions to find himself on the stomach again.
  • 5. All the efforts made by your baby to straighten his head and bust have allowed his spine to acquire the shafts necessary for its future verticality: one located at the cervical level, another in the upper back between the shoulder blades , a last at the lumbar level in the hollow of the kidneys. These archings play the role of "dampers", gravity requires. Your baby can now sit, supported by cushions. Even if the progress is there, his back still has a tendency to round up and his head to swing forward.
  • 6. By 6-7 months, your baby will gain the precious sense of balance that was still missing. It's all about neurological maturation. He will gradually acquire new benchmarks that will allow him to change position with confidence, to steer his body as he wants ...
